After drawing against Brighton, and dropping points for the fifth time in seven Premier League games, Jürgen Klopp admitted Liverpool was suffering a crisis of confidence.
In the first half, Liverpool produced another chaotic defensive display, and Brighton had the chance to lead 2-0 after 18 minutes at Anfield and could have been four ahead.
Brighton produced another error, which Liverpool used to make the lead by 3-2. But Brighton’s Leandro Trossard scored the third goal to complete his hat-trick, and this hat-trick was the first by a visiting player at Anfield in 13 years.
Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, said the confidence level now is not extraordinarily high. In difficult moments like this, you have to fight so hard that you get momentum and confidence back step by step, he said.
Klopp said we had confident moments, but the passing game was not good. We passed balls all over the place, which we can only explain by saying that we were not confident at that moment because of how the game started, he said.
Klopp said we are under pressure, we do not ignore that, we do not increase it every day, but it is there. Moreover, he said we want to do much better, have more points, improves in the table, and then we are 2-0 down against a good opponent. They always cause us problems here, play between the lines well, and we have to keep working, he said.
Klopp said to the team you remember games here from years ago when we were only one goal up, and it happened quite frequently. It reminded me of that a bit today, I cannot say I was 100% convinced that we would not concede a goal when we were 3-2 up, and Three-three feels like a defeat even though it is not, he said.
Klopp said the boys could play much better, and my job is to create a situation where they can deliver. For that, you need stability and consistency, get that with top defending, and we did not have that, he said.
Klopp said they were dangerous, I do not know how many times I saw their offensive players turning between the lines, and it was horrible to watch.
